The matrix/blanking die kit consists of four matched
pieces of 2-1/2" x 4"metal and acrylic that
speed-up the making of your die. It includes the following:
A. Flat Ground Tool & Die Steel (FGTDS).
If you choose to order this from a machine shop tool
supplier , it is measured in inches (USA) and is commonly
available in 1" increments in widths up to 36",
and lengths of 18" and 36". Thickness ranges
from 1/32" - 3/64" - 1/16" and 5/64".
Much thicker material is available, but is not normally
used by the metalsmith/jeweler.
Choosing a thickness is influenced by several factors:
1. A blanking die cannot cut metal thicker than itself.
2. The thinner the die, the shorter the expected life.
3. The thicker the die, the longer it takes to saw out
the design.
4. 1/32" thick FGTDS will cut most gauges of metal
used in jewelry, but is more prone to damage.
5. 3/64" is probably the best compromise for durability
and ease of cutting, but it is almost twice as expensive
as the 1/16" "You pays your money and takes
your choice".
B. Brass or copper 28 to 22 gauge, thickness
is not important. This becomes the template used to
transfer the blanking die contour to the matrix die.
C. Cold rolled steel (CRS) 18 or 16 gauge,
available from a sheet metal supply house. This becomes
the face plate of the acrylic die and keeps a crisp
edge for a long time.
D. Cast acrylic sheet 1/4" to 3/8"
thick. This is the material for making the matrix die.
E. 1/16" dia. brazing rod. Available from
your welding supply house. This becomes the alignment
pins necessary to accurately register everything.
