Re: How to make dies for medals

Hi Camille,
The coining limits for a 20 ton press is approx. 5/8" or dime size.
A 50 ton press is capable of coining approx. 1" and 150 tons would be needed to coin as much as a 2" piece.
These are all approximate figures, the variables of the metal properties and the detail level and depths of the die all have effects on the final tonnage needed for a particular project.
Do you already have coining dies? If not, you might want to research the techniques available for producing coining dies.
Conforming dies made out of liquid steel (Devcon) are not capable of the fine detail that is typical of medalions. However, lower pressures are used with conforming dies and you could end up with some acceptable results.
Check the archives, and if you haven't had a workshop on the topic I would certainly recommend attending one.
