Just to throw one more thought into the stream; why not use two "C" shaped rings, one above the other with the gap offset? While you are at it, use plastic or rubber (Teflon even) tubing (ie fuel line). Tubing is less critical for diameter; it will squish - but leave some air space so it can still roll.
