Hi...I know of at least one person that is doing this type of work to create Civil War museum quality double and tryptics (sp?). The copper is 36 gauge, and the embossing medium is plexiglass that is engraved with a CNC router, although the originals were generated with an engraving lathe ( I can never pronounce or even spell it, but it begins with Hatz...aphel). These were the lathes used by Fabrege for creating the backgrounds on some of the jewelery.
Anyway, the metal is placed on top of a 1/16" thick 80 duro pad, the embossing plate put on top and pressed at 6000 psi. Metal is available anywhere, depending upon where you are in the world. It always helps to give a general area of the world that you are in when you are asking of where to buy something as you might get a suggested location in Lower Siberia.Hope that this helps
