Dar, I'd be happy to give it a try, I don't see any problem with it.
If you need 800 pcs., I'd think it would be best to have a special die built that would speed the layup process and guarantee identical pieces. Did you ever see Lee's hemisphere formers? The die I have in mind would have a similar feature, the recessed circular pocket to drop the copper blank into, along with the clamping die, and punch.
I'll try it out later today on thin sheet, and let you know if it works.
