Hi all, I'm Brian Adam and a New Zealand jeweller making earrings,
rings, and eyeglasses. I started making jewellry in 1979 when I met
Ruth. I work from a home-based studio workshop alongside my wife Ruth
who is a jeweller making earrings, rings, pins, and crochet
necklaces. The press is a new item in our workshop.

I just made a basic unit with the help of the neighbour who is an
auto body-repair man. He also works fom home. It's kind of a New
Zealand thing, working from home. It's also a NZ thing to be
self-reliant. It's necessary, often, when imports like tools and
equipment are so expensive, given our exchange rate ($NZ1 = $US0.55c)
is so unfavourable to us.

I first used a press a few years ago when teaching jewellery here,
and students were interested in pressing shapes. I used a truck
wheel-puller and some urethane sandwiched between chunks of steel.
It worked up to a point. Now I spend more time here at home, and I
use the press with some Bonnydoone parts for a basic low-dome
application in a range of my earrings. It's worked well enough as a
labour-saving device, but I do no experimentation as yet.

I hope this forum will help me get inspired to try some tricks. But
I'm afraid I don't have too much to spend on parts as yet. I'll
probably cobble together  a test out of make-shift scrap, and see
how it works for me before thinking about buying Bonnydoone parts.

I'm hesitant about this forum, being web-based not email (majordomo)
based, but willing to give it a try. My problem with this format is my
editing window (the one I'm using right now) is small in height as well as width.
I guess this is the 70 character-width I chose? But it doesn't wrap and
as a result I am finding it rather unweildy.

I'm satisfied with email-based mail lists and belong to many, like over a dozen.
My email application filters the incoming mail from each list to
a special local nesgroup for me, so dealing with them all
is easy.
This web-based forum is just a little too slow and unreliable
(browsers crash, etc) for me. Do I need to be online all this time?
PLUS I'm on a totally non-standard computer and browser. I have an
Acorn RiscPC from Cambridge UK, and I use the Fresco browser from
ANT in UK. It's a whole different world. Our motto is 'Be different'.

Brian
