A simplistic model: Imagine a peg board, only thicker (say 1") with pins in each hole and a solid, removable backing plate. Place the arrangement up-side-down on a negative model of the desired surface. Fill the back side of the holes with small steel shot (no need to measure the amount!). Replace the backing plate to hold the shot in place and invert to yield the desired surface. ....Jack
