Hydraulic Die Forming Discussion Group
Anonomous contribution

I have been trying to analyse the thought process of the lurker vs contributor for some time. I have just been in contact with one such person and felt that their email was the sort of thing that needed to be put on the group. I am deleting a bit as irrevelant to the message, but here it is (a bit edited):

"I've been watching your site for some time. ------------------------ so I don't ever have anything to add. ------------ I don't own one of your presses, yet. And I really think that I would want one for my one-off stuff.-------------------------------- I used to do all my own casting but gave that up, just too much time. I feel in my heart that your press is the most revolutionary tool to come along for smaller producers since rubber molds. And I want to be in on it."

I don't know about you, but I enjoy a compliment as much as the next person. I also think that the above is a valid statement that has something of value for others.

I am starting to work on what to take to the San Francisco SNAG conference. I don't know if any of you remember the 1990 conference, but it was there that I introduced the press to the metalsmithing community. We have come a long way in the intervening 12 years. In working with several of you, we have developed an entire array of tooling and presses. We have expanded the techniques to the point that a ten day workshop is now almost a requirement to fully understand the concepts, and about a year to develop total fluency in the language.

It is not just my thinking that we have had a major impact on the metalsmithing/jewelry making community. It is ratified by the above statement (no I didn't write it myself). Wouldn't it be kinda' nifty to have a celebration of the event that put us on the map?

Any comments?

Lee
