Hi...Deep drawing of steel is just like doing it with copper/brass. You have been successful with blanks that are just slightly bigger than the drawn size, which results in a shallow cup. As you get bigger, the flange wrinkling becdomes a problem, and that is why a top hold-down is used.
With the Bonny Doon System, the hold-down plate is bolted around the outside of the disc, and depending upon size, can either be tightened "finger-tight", or the use of a torque wrench is required.
Phil Poirier's book goes into quite a bit of detail about all of this, and I really recommend that you get one from him.
