The reason that there is not a search engine for the archives, is that each message exists seperate from everything else. The "threads" are unlinked, and we simply haven't been able to figure it out.
However, part of the pleasure of trolling through the listings, is the serendipity factor :-)

As far as material to use for a die, since you are going to have it done by someone with adequate equipment, the material choice is not important. For example, if you are going to have it EDM'd, you can already have the piece heat treated! The machine doesn't care.
