Betty,
Sorry it took so long to respond, I have been teaching all week and haven't found the time to get on-line.
The book "Plastic working of metals and press operations" describes it as one of "Cold operations of the Squeezing Group", along with swaging, embossing and extrusion. This class of press operations, it goes on to say, "is the most severe of the four groups of pressing."
Dar summed it up when he mentioned an everyday coin, you start with a plug or disc of metal, and squeeze it until the metal becomes fluid and fills the die. Like the coins we use as currency we can obtain very fine detail in the piece. I use the process of coining for my jewelry. Attached is an example of 18k earrings, about 3/4 " diameter, the width of the lines are about 1.1 mm and the height above the surface is about .5 mm.
I hope this answers your question,
Phil
