I play with this  a few minutes at a time and ultimately there is a simpler way  than making  exact fitted rings.  You do need a lathe.
Use  a piece of pipe or pipe connecter that  fits the size or a somewhat larger larger  within reason. Turn to a 1/8" wall thickness . Cut a gap until the piece fits into the cup. The material will make an acceptable ring even though in an open  condition it is a bit more of a "C"  than a ring. The material  is springy enough to  fit .
